Introduction

Kunqu, a Chinese opera genre that originated in Kunshan County, Suzhou City, in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, reached its peak during the 200 years between the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty and the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Known for its delicate and gentle character, Kunqu was often referred to as the 'water mill voice'. However, after the 1950s, Kunqu faced a decline and became endangered, with the remaining national kunqu opera teams settling in the Shanghai and Hangzhou areas. It was not until 'Fifteen Strings of Cash', also known as 'a play that saved a kind of theater', took the stage that Kunqu's development started to reverse. This led to various cultural activities being launched across the country to rescue and revive kunqu. In this context, let's engage in a conversation with literary scholar Pai Hsien-yung and hear his story about the renowned 'Peony Pavilion'.
