The view of “Two Countries” led to tension in cross-strait relations, which ceased the political and cultural interchange in both places. The cross-strait policy of Taiwan and her political status form the dominant factor affects her economic development. Along with Taiwan Presidential Election in 2008, Ma Ying-jeou’s landslide victory brought Kuomintang back to power, and more importantly, the resume of cross-strait dialogue.
On Apr 21, 2008, nine Mainland property tycoons formed a delegation for a four-day tour in Taiwan. The delegates included Liu Chang-le, the CEO of Phoenix Satellite Television Limited and the director of Zhong Cheng Le Tian Real Estate Development Co. Ltd., Pan Shi-yi and Zhang Xin, chairman and chief executive of SOHO China, Chan Cheuk-yin, vice chairman of Agile Property, Li Sze-lim, chairman of Guangzhou R&F Properties, and Feng Lun, chairman of Vantone Estate. The combined wealth of the delegation exceeds USD16 billion.
As it was the first large-scale Mainland business delegation since 1949, the visit generated much attention in Taiwan. They visited provinces from north to south and were treated hospitably by the provincial leaders. The visit was believed to have positive on Taiwan economic growth. However, there is also concern that the large influx of capital may lead to political instability and social problem. This unprecedented ice-melting trip shall be a model for the up coming Mainland delegations and add a new page in the cross-strait relationship.
An Entrepreneurial Trip to Taiwan is a complete record of the trip. Phoenix TV invites you to join the historical tour.
