The Han Kuang is considered as the largest combined services military exercise in Taiwan. After the breaking of diplomatic relations between the United States and Taiwan, the target of such operation had shifted from reinvading China to raising their overall defense capabilities to counter mainland China’s military threat. With three years of planning, it enhances training for joint operations among the three branches of the Armed Forces. Regarding the numbers of the participating troop, comprehensive courses, complexity, battlefield adaptability and scale of mobilization, this military exercise is currently the highest level in Taiwan’s history. On 23 June 1984, codenamed "Han Kuang exercise #1" was first held on the island of Penghu. Since then, it has become a regular maneuver that lasts for days, weeks, even a few months.Han Kuang has since begun to reflect the themes of each president’s defense policy, which call for different visions on protection measures and ground defense.
The documentary looks into the development of the Han Kuang exercise series since 1984. Also, it discovers how Taiwan’s military is using quality to offset its quantitative shortcomings.
