The programme brings you stories of five preachers. They came to China with the Gospel of God, but they were regarded as monsters by the Chinese at that time. They were foreign devils of unknown origin and evil intentions. They have gone through a long process from disgust and vigilance to gradual blending and understanding.
Episode 1: William Edward Soothill
This episode mainly tells how William Edward Soothill was sent to China by the United Methodist Free Church to preach and win the favor of the Chinese people by practicing medicine. Although he experienced frustrations during this period, he spent half his life in Wenzhou and founded a hospital, a training college, schools and 200 preaching stations to spread Christianity and achieve success in the end.
Episode 2: Samuel Pollard
This episode tells the story of Samuel Pollard’s effort in Zhaotong, Yunnan Province, especially in Shimenkan, where he created characters and established schools for the Miao people. Shimenkan became the cultural center of the Miao people at that time.
Episode 3: Thomas Torrance
This episode tells the story of Thomas Torrance. He came to Sichuan when he was 24 years old in 1896. In the following half of his life, he had done a lot of cultural research and exchange work. Up to now, people have studied the Qiang culture. Torrance is still an important reference.
Episode 4: John Leighton Stuart
There are many documentaries about Stuart Leighton, but this episode mainly reviews how Stuart Leighton's life changed from a preacher's point of view, he rejected missionary work at first but ended up with being a famous and successful preacher.
Episode 5: Augustin Henninghaus
Henninghaus is another preacher who devoted his whole life to Chinese missionary work. This episode tells of his coming from a foreign country, experiencing discomforts and contradictions in various aspects of life, as well as threats from bandits, and also friendly exchanges with the descendants of Confucius. He eventually became a preacher and spread the doctrine in Yanzhou, Shandong Province.
